Only a few months after he vowed that he would not be practising his craft in the country of his birth anymore, comedian Q Dube, real name Nqobizitha Mitchel Dube, has begun turning heads in his new home, South Africa, where his hilarious sets are earning rave reviews.
Dube, who was crowned the country’s best comedian at the 2017 National Arts Merit Awards, made the trek to South Africa in the middle of last year in search of greener pastures as he looked to advance his promising comedy career.
The Bulawayo-born funnyman, who was also a host on a local radio station, said that he would only be coming back to the country to visit his parents as his opportunities were limited at home.
“If I’m to leave South Africa, I’ll go further away as I’m not coming back to Zimbabwe to be based there. I’ll just come to see my parents, perform and go back to my South African base” he told our sister paper, The Chronicle, at the time.
Six months later it seems like Dube, who is a regular feature at top comedy spots in Johannesburg and Cape Town as well as being a DJ on the 1873fm, is a step closer to realising his lofty ambitions.
The talented comedian was hailed as one of the bright prospects from Mzansi Magic’s Comedy Wednesdays, a laugh fest which sees comedians showcase their rib-tickling skills every last Wednesday of every month on the popular channel.
Last month’s edition of the comedy show aired on Boxing Day, and although there were many talented comics on display, social media was abuzz about Dube’s performance in particular.
