PERSONAL style is something that each of us has, we just have to identify it, understand it, and then live it. It projects your mood, personality and you as a whole, reflecting your personal interests, lifestyle, inspirations, and fashion preferences.
When you find your personal style you know you look great and feel confident when you leave your home. Whether you prefer chic, street, high fashion, casual or classic, you can make your style look classy when the occasion calls for it.
Being fashionable is a necessity. Try reading magazines to understand the kind of clothing that go well together and how to put together a classy outfit. Make sure that you develop your own style and make your own posh statement. Avoid anything which you feel doesn’t complement you. It is advisable to have a personal style than chasing a ‘‘fad’’ look.
You don’t need to have a lot of money, or any for that matter to be a classy woman. Simply take pride in what you do own always and put on your best face when you go out into the world. Always wear clean clothes, freshly pressed with no threads, rips, stains or fading. Wear a neatly put together outfit that you know looks good and throw on a few natural-looking basics such as a bit of mascara, a neutral shade of lipstick or gloss, and just a hint of blush.
The proper fit
Classy and sophisticated clothing is typically tailored and form fitting (not too tight, but you can show off that figure). Skirts should hit just above or below the knee, as should your dresses. Classic trousers are straight, slightly wide, faintly bootcut, or menswear inspired and should be ½-inch off the floor in the back. Blazers, blouses, and sweaters should follow the curve of your waist.
Do not hesitate to take items to a tailor to be altered to fit properly. However, not everything you wear has to be perfectly tailored and form-fitting. You can mix in unstructured pieces for a more relaxed vibe. Pair a blue-striped t-shirt with chinos and a denim jacket or a flowy maxi skirt with a crisp white button-down shirt.
Cover up
Classy dressing requires a bit of modesty. No midriff-baring tops, revealing low décolletage or tiny miniskirts. Necklines are typically collared, boatneck, round or V-neck. For some variety, you can also try square, cowl, and scoop necks, and for more formal times, asymmetrical, sweetheart and halter necklines work as well. Regardless, keep your cleavage and your belly button covered. And armholes on blouses and dresses should not reveal your bra.
Keep your accessories on check
Accessories are meant to add glam to the look so they shouldn’t be too much. This is how you can do it:
— Earrings: Do keep your earrings simple such as small silver or gold hoops, pearl or diamond studs.
— Bracelet: Go for the silver or gold bangles, tennis bracelet, or even a gold or silver watch. If you want to be edgy wear the leather belt watch.
— Necklace: You will never go wrong with the long pendants, pearls, diamond solitaire, cross. Chokers would be very tricky for a classic look.
— Ring: Some may not find rings necessary, but if you do, go either delicate or statement. Thin bands, diamonds, or heirloom rings are fine, and everyone should have one cocktail ring to wear to events or dress up your jeans. Stick to ring and/or middle fingers only, although latest fashion trends make it very stylish to wear rings on all fingers including the index and thumb.
— Scarf: Scarves are a great way to add colour and visual interest to a sophisticated outfit, particularly if it is solid or monochrome in colour. Try multiple colours and fabrics, with light silk or cotton for spring and thicker wool ones for winter.
Florals, paisleys, stripes, and solids are great options.
Fabrics
Classic, timeless clothing is made of materials that will last well into the next decade. Do go for your cotton, wool, linen, and silk. These four basic fabrics will last almost forever if properly taken care of. Cleaned and pressed, items made of these fabrics tend to give off a classy vibe all on their own.
These fabrics also have variations that allow you to expand on your wardrobe. Denim is one example of a cotton fabric that cuts across all style lines, from street to bohemian to classic. Then there is cashmere, a type of wool that feels heavenly against the skin and doesn’t peel with age. Cashmere sweaters, whether they are cardigans, v-necks, or crewneck pullovers pair perfectly with those denim jeans, as well as tailored pants and skirts.
#Read the labels and care for them properly to make them last. While wrinkle-free cotton has become more available, most cotton items will need to be ironed. Classy doesn’t do wrinkled!
Blacks and navys are always the way to go. A bold colour is just there to add that pop to the outfit. For instance a red belt on a navy dress or a gold handbag with that LBD (little black dress). Classy and sophisticated ladies NEVER want to look like clowns, in all bright and bold colours, there should be a balance.
Don’t be overly fussy. Covering yourself in glitter and excessive orange make up will not look classy. Keep it simple and
CLASSY . . .
