Kudzai Mpangi, Sunday Life Reporter

BULAWAYO-based motivational speaker and writer Njabulo Moyo has been a force to reckon with as he continues to inspire his audiences and raising the Zimbabwean flag high.

An annual event held by the National Association of Primary School Heads (NAPH) started on November 1 to November 2 at Harare International Conference Centre (HICC) where Moyo was one of the selected guest speakers at the event.

It ran under the theme “Implementation of the updated curriculum: A challenge to the school heads”.

About 2000 delegates attended the occasion with the ten provinces in attendance, Mashonaland Central province being the host of this year’s event.

“I feel very honoured and humbled to contribute to a process of nation building through education. We cannot divorce the need for motivation within school heads and teaching profession as a whole and as a consumer of content this was the right platform for me to address such an issue,” he said.

Moyo said being a guest speaker and addressing in front of a huge audience was a major breakthrough for his career.

“This is a testimony to the fact that one’s background should be a vehicle to unlocking opportunities. I’m very humbled to have been given an opportunity to present to more than 2000 people given the fact that I have never had such a great opportunity to present to a large audience. I believe that my presence was felt and Harare and Zimbabwe is changing for greatness,” he said.

“This is a wakeup call for me and all creative’s to be consistent. I would like to thank Mrs C Khumalo NAPH president for having faith in me and believing in my work, this shows that as an individual im doing a great job for my country,” he said.

Moyo added that he managed to give a stellar of a presentation from his latest book titled Self Starters.

“I aimed at giving a speech that will not only inspire delegates but also take that speech with them given the fact that the new curriculum is an exciting thing. The new curriculum should start from the school heads for it to be embraced. That is why they should have a high degree of self-discipline, self-awareness within themselves because if they don’t have that how are they going to translate to the students,” he said.

The video features Iluba Lemvelo, Ishmael Muvingi, Martin Khumalo and Faith Moyo dressed in traditional Ndebele costumes making it clear that the Amahlolanyama hit maker is an African princess proud of her origins.

Amathambo Ezinyoka which means bones of snakes, is a traditional song from yester yearm which the singer fused with maskandi sound. The video was shot and directed by Tswareli Mothobe who also worked on Sisa`s Amahlolanyama video.

“The video portrays Ndebele traditional culture. Amathambo Ezinyoka refers to snake bones given to one to be a seer. I will remain a Maskandi queen for life,” she said.

Kudzai Mpangi, Sunday Life Reporter
TALENTED gospel musician Michael “Minister” Mahendere is set for a live DVD album recording slated on 18 November at 7 Arts theatre in Harare.

The DVD albums will carry two volumes titled Classical Worship and Getting personal with God Volume Three. Each will carry 10 tracks.

“Getting personal with God Three came to me in 2007 as the Holy Spirit was inspiring me to write songs about Him. So the word of God is my inspiration.

By listening to the messages preached by my spiritual father Prophet Makandiwa I then began to write songs in this particular album,” Mahendere said.

“Classical Worship has been inspired by my old song Makanaka Jesu which has become a world hit. We are basically using the same grace that God gave us to bring such songs with a different feel and touch just to make sure everyone is blessed,” he added.

The live recording will feature multiple award-winning gospel musician Loyiso Bala in the song “Chiiko”. He is set to jet in for the live recording next week.

“We have one of the finest musicians in South Africa, Loyiso Bala who will perform two songs on the day together, Chiiko and Believe. I met Bala in 2015 when he came for the Permican music awards and he is an amazing person to work with and mature in music. He has confirmed his coming to the country for this special occasion,” Mahendere said.

Mahendere added that there will be local artistes who will feature on some tracks.

“I have songs which I collaborated with a brother from Masvingo, Welcome Nhariswa whom together we will do a song called Ndiye Mwari. Also featuring is my brother Amos Mahendere on a song Makomborero and finally my beautiful wife Vimbai Mahendere. I look forward to this day because God will move and do all the work,” he said.

Mahendere said the response from people has been overwhelming. Mahendere has three albums to his name.

AFTER losing both legs to gangrene two years ago, a former Abatsha Dance Group member, Nomathamsanqa Matsheza, recently wedded a man she met online, Sunday Life is informed.

Matsheza, who in June 2015 came down with a common cold, which later affected her immune system turning into gangrene, lost both her limbs leaving her bound to a wheelchair.

The 34-year-old Matsheza who highly depended on dancing to make ends meet, last year approached the media seeking assistance to procure prosthetic legs. Perhaps her plight was heard beyond borders and developed into more than just an appeal but a heart-warming love story.

Nomathamsanqa3

Despite shying away from the media about her fairy tale, Matsheza and her husband have been posting on social media lovely pictures and stories of their love and wedding held somewhere in Bulawayo.

Her husband Hilmar Koenig, a German national boldly posted not so long ago: “I have got an outstanding wife. Her name is: NOMI.” The post received many likes and comments.

Happy couple — Nomathamsanqa and Hilmar

A brave woman who was blinded in a horrific acid attack aged just 15 after rejecting a marriage proposal has found the love of her life in a touching way.

Evidently from the way the pair shares pictures of themselves and openly talk about their love life on social media, Koenig treats Matsheza like a princess and queen and always encourages her to live a positive and happy life.

The pair is believed to have met a few years ago and their relationship has finally blossomed into marriage.

“Anyone faced with what she went through would obviously experience depression, but her prince and knight in shining armour rescued her from that and is very happy,” said a relative.

Koenig, would talk to her for hours and motivate her, till she regained her confidence.

“She is happy that she was able to restart her life, all glory being to God and would like to urge all disabled and those lacking confidence in finding love, given their disability to pray to God and he shall grant it,” said the relative.

Bhekumuzi Ncube, Sunday Life Reporter
WITH a few weeks remaining to rock the most liked month in the world, Mzobanzi “Mzoe7” Mlauzi has released a witty song titled Babes weMonthend which promises to be among the top hits this festive season.

To children, December is the month of new clothes and Christmas celebrations, but to workers the main thing on mind is bonuses. Mzoe7 believes the majority of people are deceived by treacherous women and men who get close to them only for their money, and he said the track Babes weMonthend advises people to be careful when spending their money this festive season.

“Many people will love you for what you have, only a few will love you for who you are. Babes weMonthend reminds workers, artistes and people in general to be more responsible with their money. The lyrics of the track say ‘lomntwan’ ungibiza ngo Babes weMonthend ungithanda ngiholile’ meaning there are people who will only smile for people’s salaries, but when you are struggling they will be nowhere to be found,” he said.

Babes weMonthend is part of Mzoe7’s EP titled The Mooguchief which consists of tracks like Calender, Yes sir, Fill-up the Jojo and Istory yiso.

To many people, it`s quite unthinkable that Mzoe7 is yet to launch his debut album as he has been involved in many successful duets with renowned artistes. His most recognised project was with award winning dancer Sandra Ndebele, in which they produced a thumping hit titled Ingoma.

The Vuzu hit maker has previously been nominated twice in Song of the Year category.

In 2015 he was nominated for his blockbuster hit I cry too and in this year’s Bulawayo Arts Awards (BAA) for the hit Ingoma. He said he hoped to scoop awards with his latest songs in the upcoming arts awards.

“Coming so close to emerging victorious in previous arts awards has encouraged me to believe in myself and work extra hard to achieve greater things in the future,” he said.

It`s been quite a fruitful year for the multitalented superstar.

In July, he started hosting ZBCtv show called Star Maker which seeks to expose people behind the success of musicians which include the likes of producers, costume designers, music writers and managers.

Kudzai Mpangi, Sunday Life Reporter
AWARD-WINNING gospel artiste Minister Takesure Zamar Ncube has recently become one of Zimbabwe’s successful and celebrated gospel singers.

Takesure Zamar, who recently signed for a recording label, Bold Music with Pastor Tebs David in South Africa is experiencing another breakthrough on his music career.

He launched an album on October 28 in South Africa where he is now based. The album consists of 25 tracks.

“My album has 25 tracks in all but I have split it into two CDs. The first one has 10 songs and the other has 15 songs. All I can say is that God has been doing wonders in my life and this album comes as an appreciation to him even though I will never thank him enough, but I really appreciate God’s love towards me,” Zamar said.

Dubbed Worship Addicts Season One the album carries with it a message of worship as God is the master of all things.

“I am more than happy with the response. I think I am the first Zimbabwean gospel artiste whose music is sold formally in a foreign country. The joy of seeing a Zimbabwean product on the shelves in a foreign country in all South African provinces is a feeling that every artiste will embrace, especially if its gospel music,” he said.

Zamar added that he appreciates the love that has been shown to him by South Africans.

He will be conducting launches in all South African provinces and back at home.

“I owe so much to my fans here in South Africa so I will be partaking on launches in the entire provinces and mostly back home because I so much want my fans at home to have a taste of this good worship music,” he said.

Zamar has a word of encouragement to upcoming artistes who want to make it big in the music industry.

“What I have realised with many upcoming artistes is that they don’t believe in themselves. My encouragement to them is run in your lane, don’t follow what others are doing, do so because God is there and a major breakthrough will come in your way,” he said.

Zamar now has seven albums to his name. -@kayskudzai

IF you are passionate and interested in learning different sublime hairstyles, then the Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation has a perfect television show for you.

The show premières this month at a date and time yet to be confirmed. Named The Hairstylist, the show is designed to unearth hidden talents and artistic expertise among local hairdressers.

It also aims to celebrate people who work hard to make all women’s hair look beautiful, while at the same time opening eyes of local hairdressers to endless possibilities that lie within the profession.

The director and producer of the show, Respect Chofamba said their objective was to publicise local hairdressing masters.

“The vision of the show is to produce hairdressing masters that have an entrepreneurial mind, grasping that hairdressing is a source of income and one can choose to make it their profession. Furthermore, hair is a lifestyle thing and trends keep changing all the time. The show wants to set the leading hair trends in the nation,” she said.

Chofamba said ZBC was currently looking for the time and date the show will be aired.

“After completing the preliminary rounds of the nationwide hairstyling competition, we are now finalising on the dates and time the competition will be aired on the screens this month with ZBC bosses,” she said.

Chofamba said they selected two contestants per city to compete in the finale that is slated for 15 December in Harare.

“In Bulawayo, we got some amazing hairstyles that were jaw dropping. We only wanted two finalists per city. There were ten contestants who were given about seven hairpieces. They were supposed to create a hairstyle that will qualify them to the finals. These contestants were selected through an entry form-based system,” she said.

Bulawayo contestants who made it to the finale are Ottilia Mwale and Tedious Moyo who is a male hairdresser. Chofamba said the show had two categories in which competitors were required to portray their creativity in hairstyling.

“The show will require contestants to do a free style and cosmopolitan category. The free style category allows hairdressers to explore the artistic nature of hairstyling by creating an artistic and extraordinary hair piece. The cosmopolitan category requires hairdressers to create a modern hairstyle that will set trends for 2018. The kind of hairstyle that women will want to wear,” she said.

All the finalists are set to undergo entrepreneurial skills training; etiquette and customer relations training that will hopefully help them grow their businesses.

Let’s clean up arts industry: Hlongwane

Makhosini Hlongwane

Bhekumuzi Ncube, Sunday Life Reporter
BULAWAYO artistes thronged the National Art Gallery to engage in an extraordinary dialogue with the recently appointed Minister of Sports, Arts, Culture and Heritage Hon Makhosini Hlongwane last week.

The meeting was called for artistes to share their experiences, grievances, and create a working relationship with the arts ministry for the industry to thrive. Artistes from various sub-sectors like fashion, dance and spoken word gave presentations.

“The majority of people are not aware that I am a Bulawayo resident. This is not the last time we meet as we will be communicating with each other for a healthy arts industry. After this interface I am going to engage with various arts leaders or presenters to discuss in detail the issues tackled today,” said the minister.

Hon Hlongwane urged artistes to show professionalism to portray a beautiful culture to an integrated world.

“Drug abuse is usually high in arts. Young artistes coming out of the ghetto sometimes, with beautiful talents engage in behaviour that is beyond that of vandals. They smoke mbanje and other drug substances to get high and gain confidence to perform on stage. What they do not know is that when they are in that state they do not represent a healthy arts sector to the world. Drugs should get out of the arts for the industry to thrive,” he said.

Artistes persuaded the minister to increase ways of putting to end the ever growing piracy in Zimbabwe. He then said artistes should be careful in distributing their content as modern technology made it easy for their music to be pirated.

“There are artistes who intentionally feed their work to the internet to gain exposure and fame. They believe that when they become famous, fans will attend their live shows which are now deemed to be the main source of income among many artistes. This makes it difficult for the police and the Government to fight piracy. If artistes release their work to the internet where it is fast downloaded and pirated, there is no way the ministry and the law can stop piracy.

“The Government does not support illegality. We will fight piracy with our fullest force. Artistes have the right to be protected because without them the nation has no identity. Various countries know Zimbabwe through its artistes who have extensively toured across the globe and received massive welcoming,” he said.

Hon Hlongwane boldly emphasised on entrepreneurship among artistes.

“I had a conversation with Reverend Paul Damasane (director in the ministry) for a development programme of artistes. Artistes have talents but some do not know how to do business with it. It is our responsibility as the ministry that artistes are trained and educated on entrepreneurship. They should be taught on different helpful aspects such as how to present themselves and communicate as artistes. Artistes must know the value of their work as the Government cannot negotiate the price of their work,” he said.

Zimbabwe is one of the countries which often bring in foreign artistes to grace festivals and concerts.

For instance, in this calendar year, the City of Kings welcomed international superstars like Busy Signal and South African rapper Casper Nyovest.

Minister Hlongwane agreed to local artistes’ suggestion to force collaborations with foreign artistes who will be hired to perform in the country.

“Making every visiting artiste from beyond borders collaborate with local artistes will promote cultural diversity as well as spearhead them to international recognition. I will very much communicate with members of National Arts Council to work on the issue,” he said.

Honourable Hlongwane said the arts infrastructure issue will also be discussed with various arts leaders.

“I understand that the majority of arts premises are controlled by the City Council. The Government will work on building arts centres where artistes can perform and do their artistic work. It’s very important that artistes have premises in which they can produce, share and distribute their work,” he said.

MP Hlongwane also challenged artistes to work together.

“Artistes should come to an understanding on the amount needed for various performances they are being hired for. They should agree on the price needed to hire well-established artistes and growing artistes. For instance, they can agree that to hire a renowned artiste you need to pay $1 000 whereas for a growing artiste you are required to pay $500.

“They should avoid competing among each other as that could cripple their success. There are situations whereby a particular artiste requires $2 000 for his or her services for a particular gig, whereas for that same gig, a competing artiste might only require  $1 000 and the cheaper one will most likely get the job. This makes it clear that competing among each does not benefit every artiste,” he said.

Minister Hlongwane also lauded veteran history writer Phathisa Nyathi’s presentation on arts policies, stating that he was looking forward to working with him.

Chat with Sis Noe: My boyfriend does not want to be circumcised

Hi Sis Noe
I AM 26 and married. After ejaculation, my sperms find their way out of my wife’s vagina. Will I be able to reproduce? — Worried.

Reply
Sperm leakage from the vagina is normal and to be expected when there is enough of the ejaculate. Sperm leakage means there is enough of the ejaculate. Most people notice some discharge immediately after sex and some think it’s the cause of infertility. The fluid coming out of the vagina is a portion of the ejaculate. But less than five percent of the ejaculate is actually sperm; over 95 percent is made up of other fluids. Leakage of the ejaculate from the vagina is highly unlikely to prevent your wife from getting pregnant.

In fact, it’s totally normal for some of the ejaculate to come out of her vagina after intercourse. If you ejaculate deep inside her, then you can be sure that no matter how much of the ejaculate leaks out afterward, enough sperm will reach the cervical mucus. If your wife stays on her back for the suggested 15-20 minutes after intercourse, hips slightly elevated, this leakage of the ejaculate is usually not a cause of infertility. But usually it is a good sign that some ejaculate leaks out because it may mean that you are depositing your semen normally in her vagina and that there is enough of it.

Hi Sis Noe
I’m 16 and I am having a problem of producing whitish stuff and water but I don’t know the cause of this. — Help.

Reply
Vaginal discharge is very normal. Glands inside your vagina and cervix make small amounts of fluid. This fluid flows out of the vagina each day, carrying out old cells that have lined the vagina. This is your body’s way of keeping your vagina healthy and clean. The discharge is usually clear or milky and doesn’t smell bad. The colour and thickness of the discharge change with your monthly cycle. The discharge is thicker when you ovulate (when one of your ovaries releases an egg).

Changes that may signal a problem include an increase in the amount of discharge, a change in the colour or smell of the discharge, and irritation, itchiness or burning in or around your vagina. This is called vaginitis. A discharge that is stained with blood when you are not having your period could also be a sign of a problem. If you have any of these signs, you should talk to your doctor. I am sure there is nothing wrong with you but you can avoid vaginitis by wiping yourself from front to back after using the toilet. This helps prevent bacteria from your rectal area getting into your vagina. Wear cotton underpants during the day.

Cotton allows your genital area to breathe. Don’t wear underpants at night. Avoid wearing tight pants, pantyhose, swimming suits, biking shorts or leotards for long periods. Change your laundry detergent or fabric softener if you think it may be irritating your genital area. Avoid hot tubs. Bath or shower daily and pat your genital area dry. Avoid feminine hygiene sprays, coloured or perfumed toilet paper, deodorant pads or tampons, and bubble bath.

Hi Sis Noe
My boyfriend has a problem, he is not circumcised. I don’t want to have sex with him because of that. His uncircumcised penis turns me off but he does not want to get circumcised. What can I do about this problem of his? I want him to be circumcised. — Starved.

Reply
It’s your problem, not his. If the look of your vagina did not please him would you want him to recoil in disgust or appreciate you for who you are? Your strong reaction to the inch or so of skin that is supposed to be there indicates you have immaturity issues. Suggesting he should get cut to accommodate those stunning insecurities of yours is an absurd notion, and in no way considers what such a procedure would put your partner through. Undergoing a circumcision when newly-born is one thing, but as an adult it’s a totally different ballgame. You may not realise this (the health benefits of circumcision aside), it is very common for men not to be circumcised.

While this may be your first encounter with someone who has not been circumcised, you really need to adjust your thinking to the fact that it probably won’t be your last. Instead of seeing it as something intolerable, you need to be in the frame of mind that it’s natural and completely normal. Take some time to mentally re-evaluate your initial impression of his penis, which may have been of shock.

That shock then festered into a downward spiral that has led to where you are now — a mess. Let your mind take some time to digest the situation again and the fact that his uncircumcised tool doesn’t pose a threat to you. It really is a miniscule detail that you can either ignore, or if you let yourself, turn into an overblown crisis. Don’t put him on a guilt trip over this; instead put some much needed time and effort into internally resolving this yourself. He will get circumcised when he wants.

Hi Sis Noe
Our sex life is non-existent because my partner and I are never in the mood at the same time. I’m a morning person and always wake up early, while she sleeps in until 10am because she works long shifts. At weekends I have a second job in the evenings that wears me out, but this is when my partner would like us to be intimate. We both say it’s the other one who is selfish. We are in love, but how do we stop ourselves from drifting apart? — Worried.

Reply
Clearly something has to give if this relationship is to be rescued. Instead of squabbling and trading insults, I suggest you and your partner sit down and map out a solution. I realise money is always tight, but could she cut down on her hours in the week, while you give up your Saturday or Sunday shift? Relationships are all about compromise, so would she consent to one early morning love-making session in order to please you — if you promise to make more of an effort for her? You could also benefit from putting unbreakable date nights and sex dates in the diary.

Kudzai Mpangi, Sunday Life Reporter
HIP-HOP artiste Vinnie King, real name Ricco Andrews has proved that he is a force to reckon with through his successful album launch held last Saturday at Bulawayo Public Library hall.

The album titled The Full package consists of 13 tracks which touch on different genres like Afro-pop, Soul, House music and gospel.

“I dubbed it the Full package because I didn’t want to limit myself in terms of sound. This is one of my best works I have done so far and I hope that people will embrace it. I appreciate how people responded during the launch by coming in their numbers,” Vinnie said.

The tracks feature Ashleigh Love and Icon among others. Speaking about how he got to do his album launch and it being a success, King said he did not want the launch to be all about him, but something that will leave a mark in the city of Kings.

“I didn’t want the launch to be only about me. I also wanted to give my fellow artistes a platform to perform. I wanted to bring back the vibe in the city whereby fans and artistes get to socialise with each other and vibe together. This inspired me to title the event ‘The Vibe’. As Bulawayo we need to restore that vibe we had before. I remember when I was still with my crew Antivirus we used to do concerts every weekend that attracted people in their huge numbers, so I just thought why not bring that back. I’m hoping to do a lot of those shows with the support from my colleagues,” he said.

The event started with the man of the moment taking to the stage with his break dancing moves, joining him on stage was T1nda, Madamara aka K.G, Icon, Ashleigh love and R.APEEZY among others. Their presence made the launch more magical as they performed with a lot of energy.

“It is a privilege having my fellow colleagues joining me up on stage and delivering to our audience who had come expectant. I also want to give thanks to Alliance Francaise De Bulawayo, Zimbo music, Diamond berry music, for all their effortless support towards the success of the launch as well as Ilduce Dynasty for producing the great quality music,” he said.

Vinnie King has been on international stage with Kuli Chana, Mandoza, Zahara and has won many awards including his choreography work.

AWAKENING CHIWONISO: Ammara takes torch from late stepmum

Ammara Brown

Ammara Brown

Bruce Ndlovu, Sunday Life Correspondent
IN 2013, a day after the death of mbira queen, Chiwoniso Maraire, Ammara Brown could barely contain her grief and all the emotions that she had kept within came gushing out on social media.

“I went to bed this morning hoping I would awaken to the absence of my cries . . . then echoing in my head and wallowing in my mouth . . . But I’ve woken. It isn’t a nightmare. Chiwoniso, our love, our mama, really did pass away last night.

“My pillow is drenched with hot tears. I can literally feel my heart continuing to break beyond self repair. My spirit is weeping, even when my eyes are not. Chi . . . she was true love . . .was? I’m trying to accept the idea that she will not hug us again, smile again. We won’t sing together again?” she said as part of lengthy and emotionally charged post on Facebook.

Chiwoniso Maraire

Chiwoniso Maraire

It was a heartbreaking post, one that mirrored Zimbabwe’s collective grief at having lost one of its greatest ever female musicians. Ammara had always been close to her mbira virtuoso stepmother, who had been married to her equally legendary father, Andy Brown.

Amid the outpouring of grief that followed news announcing Chiwoniso’s demise, Ammara’s bucketful of tears felt the particularly sorrowful, as Chiwoniso had a huge influence on her as she was growing up.

At the time of her passing, Chiwoniso was arguably the only active female musician that could comfortably rub shoulders with some of the country’s biggest male superstars.

In a country in which the music industry can sometimes feel like a man’s game, she was one of a few musicians carrying the torch for women. Her achievements and the respect that she attained were a result of hard work and risk taking throughout her career.

Four years after she released the album Ancient Voices, which entered the Europe World Music Charts three times and brought her a nomination in the Best Female Vocals of Africa for the Kora Awards in 1999, she left Andy’s The Storm to concentrate on her own solo career.

Leaving the shelter provided by being part of a well respected and successful musician was risky to say the least. If she failed, she would have had to return, her head down and tail firmly tucked between her legs.

Instead she prospered, becoming, with her signature dreadlocks and mbira, one of Zimbabwe’s most recognisable musicians.

Four years later, not much has changed for female musicians in Zimbabwe. If one surveys the field and picks out the front-runners, it is clear that the country’s female musicians are still largely playing second fiddle to their male counterparts.

The build up to Ammara’s album last week however, suggested that with the right mixture of talent, focus and drive, female musicians can also grab the attention of hard to please Zimbabwean music lovers. Years of hard work seem about to pay off with an album highly anticipated by the legions of fans that Ammara has managed to cultivate over the last few years.

Having been blessed with a famous last name, it has been amazing to watch how rarely she has used it to get ahead in her career. Instead she has taken risks of her own, branding herself as a carefree urban girl who, despite not being afraid to show a little skin now and then, does not rely on her looks to get head.

At face value, Ammara’s music bears little resemblance to that of her stepmother. Chiwoniso was the dreadlocked African queen who made the mbira modern and fashionable. Despite switching between English and Shona flawlessly, her music was firmly rooted in the country’s ancient traditions and culture.

Ammara’s music on the other hand, is fiercely urban with the hit singles she has released over the last few years making her a darling of dance floor lovers.

However, despite this, Ammara’s fearlessness and drive show that she might have learnt a thing a two from all the years she lived under the same roof with Chiwoniso. If her album, Ammartia, is a success, she might have finally taken the torch the late mbira icon who, from wherever in the afterlife, will look down on her protégé and smile.

Lovemore Majaivana

Bruce Ndlovu, Sunday Life Correspondent
THE last time that Lovemore Majaivana’s mother heard from her son was when he called from the United States when she was seriously sick. MaNyathi, as Magee’s mother is commonly known, had been vomiting blood and struggling to walk, something that is still troubling her now even though she says that the worst is over.

Besides that period when concerned about her health, it has been silence from her celebrated son who left Zimbabwe at the turn of the millennium and has never set foot in the country again.

“We’re barely communicating. We don’t talk much and things are just not the same. We’ve lost contact. The last time that he got in touch was when I was sick. That is when he would call once in a while and ask how I’m doing,” said MaNyathi when Sunday Life visited her humble home last week.

In Mzilikazi, a suburb that has proved to be the breeding ground of many stars in different fields, MaNyathi’s home is a landmark. As the crew navigated its way through the narrow streets near Manwele Beer Garden, many were eager to lend a hand and point towards the house where the mother of one of Zimbabwe’s music greats stays.

To make ends meet, a family member operates a vending stall near the front gate of the popular drinking hole. He too was only too happy to give directions to MaNyathi’s house.

Once inside, MaNyathi revealed that all had not been well as she had been sick recently. One positive to emerge from her ill-health however, was that she had made contact with her long-lost, exiled son after a lengthy period of silence.

“The problem that I had was that I kept vomiting blood. This continued until I was admitted to hospital and that is when I started getting better although I’m still struggling to walk. That is when my son started calling and inquiring about my health. After I started getting better he disappeared again,” said MaNyathi.

Credited as the pen behind some of Majaivana’s early hits, MaNyathi revealed that communication with her son had been strained for a while.

“We used to talk a lot when he was still in Harare but you can’t compare it with our current situation. Things are just not the same,” she said.

Like last year, rumours had recently begun circulating that the famously nimble-footed “Magee” would put on his dancing shoes and come back to his country of birth for one last dance. Prominent figures in showbiz had again begun the almost annual rumour that Majaivana would return to the City of Kings for the first time in 17 years. A man who sat besides MaNyathi throughout the interview, identified by her as his brother, quashed the rumours.

“Those people are lying because we don’t know where they get that. He hasn’t even called us in four months. It’s just talk to say he is coming in December,” he said.

He added that although MaNyathi was famous for bringing up a much loved musician, she was not getting much financial help.

“Everyone wants to check on her once in a while but it would help if they handed her a $100 bill as a sign of gratitude. It would help a lot,” he said.

Although contact with Majaivana has been hard to establish in the last few years, it was not the first time that he escaped MaNyathi’s radar. She said when he first went to try his hand as a musician in the capital, he had done so without saying goodbye.

“He had been under the watch of Mneno Khumalo who taught him a lot in his early years. He combined with other young men his age like Bizo Sithole to form the Marisha Jazz Band.

“He then left without telling us and we only heard after a few weeks that he and other young musicians were now in Chitungwiza. I went to search for him with his brother and we heard that he was renting somewhere in that town,” she said.

MaNyathi managed to sniff out her son during a show in St Mary’s, where the ever cool musician maintained his form on the mic, undisturbed by his mother’s sudden appearance.

“I remember that when we showed up, he recognised us but did didn’t show any sign that he had been caught unaware. He just smiled in my direction as a sign of greeting and continued playing. We later on went to him and he showed us where he was renting and we came back to Bulawayo. From that time, he came back to me when it was time to say his goodbyes when he was about to leave for the United States,” said MaNyathi.

Having spent so many years away from her son, MaNyathi now remembers with fondness his early years as a budding musician.

“He really loved music. He used to play on those small guitars as a boy back when the stream near Manwele was well taken care of. He would perform there for people who would give him money. At school he was also not bad but he did not do well in Mathematics so he was not allowed to progress beyond Standard Six,” MaNyathi said as she reminisced about Magee’s early days in the then Rhodesia.

With a rich music legacy that earned him a reputation as an unparalleled social commentator, it was to be expected that his sons would pick up the mantle with their father out of the picture. MaNyathi points out that even Majaivana’s heirs, Derrick and Randal, have shown little concern for her plight.

“They also rarely communicate but that’s to be expected when people are young and are living in the moment and enjoying the fame that comes with being a musician. Derrick comes here once in a while when he feels like seeing his grandmother. He lives nearby in Entumbane,” she said.

Fashion mistakes to avoid

Playing it safe
IF you are the type of girl who only buys one colour and your closet is a sea of black and grey, then you are playing it safe. When you’re playing it too safe you will most likely be a culprit of boring style.

Don’t be afraid of vibrant colour or a sexy print! It’s amazing how certain colours and delicate florals will not only brighten your complexion, but also your attitude. Start slow and bring in pieces you love but never thought you could wear. If your closet is full of neutrals, start small and add a flattering print blouse. Throw in a bright blazer or cardigan over your classic little black dress. If this still seems like a big step, start with a bright coloured shoe or belt.

Not trying it on before purchase
Do not buy something online or off the rack before trying it on. It can look fabulous on the hanger, but less than amazing on you. You just never know until you try. If you’re familiar with a store or brand you know fits your body type and style, then go for it! But do take that extra five minutes and slip on the silk blouse before you spend $78 and realise it’s too small and you can’t return it.

Buying clothes bigger than your size
This does not, in fact, hide your problem areas but accentuates them and can make you look like a bag of potatoes, actually. Being stylish has nothing to do with being a size 10. Yes, some silhouettes won’t be as flattering on you as say Gabrielle Union, but you’re beautiful and you need to cherish and rock the body you have! If you have a problem of buying things that are too large, start by trying a size or two smaller. Let it soak in, and be open to showing off your best assets. Nobody is saying you need to buy a bandage dress, but your jeans should curve around your behind. If you spend half your day pulling your jeans up, they are too big. No saggy bottoms, please.

Over accessorising
You do not need a statement necklace, dangly earrings, a belt, and an oversized bag — it’s too much. Keep it chic and simple. Focus on clean silhouettes and sprinkle in one show-stopping accessory at a time. Think about balance and proportion. If you’re wearing a low cut blouse, throw on those statement earrings or a necklace. (One, not both!) If you’re wearing a high neck top, rock an arm full of heavy bangles and slick your hair back. If you’re wearing mainly neutrals, don’t be afraid to grab a bold leopard belt or oversized bright blue bag. It’s all in the balance.

Buying clothes that are too small

Stop deceiving yourself into thinking squeezing your body in a 10 when you are a 14 makes you a 10! If you keep buying clothes three sizes too small, you will look like Winnie the Pooh. When you buy clothing that fits your body, you will look thinner and feel better. It’s much better than the constant battle of trying to keep everything sucked and tucked in all day. Remember sizing across brands is extremely varied — you could be a size 12 at Zara, and a 14 at Truworths. So forget the number! Think about how it looks and feels.

Not creating time to shop
When you continually wear the same five outfits to work because you just don’t have time or hate fighting crowded malls, this is no longer an acceptable excuse! It’s almost 2018 and there are several online clothing stores which make clothes to fit your body and style, and you don’t even have to leave your house. AliExpress, EBay, and Zando etc this makes your life easier.

Ignoring care and cleaning instructions
It can be exciting to buy a new dress or a pair of shoes but then completely ignore how to care for and maintain these expensive items. You’ve spent a lot of money and time cultivating your closet, so be sure and follow instructions that come on the piece. It’s always a good idea to check labels and ask store associates, but here is a quick list to help:

— Use felt hangers. Wire hangers cannot support heavier fabrics and will leave little points in the shoulders of your clothes.

— Never machine dry your bras or delicates. The heat will ruin the elastic. Always lay flat to dry or draped over a hanger between the middle of the cups. If you let your bra hang from a strap on a door handle, it will stretch the cups and change the fit.

— Never iron delicate fabric. The heat from an iron can very quickly leave prints on your new blouse. Instead steam out the wrinkles with an iron or let hang in a steamy bathroom for a few minutes.

— Stop ignoring Dry Clean Only

Not everything has to be dry cleaned but be aware there’s a difference between Dry Clean and Dry Clean Only. If the label says Dry Clean you’re most likely still safe to hand wash and hang dry.

Not buying for your body type
It doesn’t matter how cute it is, a dropped waist jumpsuit is going to look horrible on 98 percent of the population. Don’t get caught up in some of these trends! The whole point is to make yourself look good and feel good. Pick silhouettes that will flatter your best features. Whether you want to emphasise a small waist or camouflage a problem area, think about a cut and how it hits your body. Also be aware of colour and pattern. Coral is a colour that looks good on almost all skin types, but be careful with mustard as it can really wash some people out. The same goes for large-scale prints.

If you’re petite, a big print maxi can overtake you if the silhouette is too covered. If your smallest point is your waist, dresses that cinch or emphasis the natural waist will flatter you the most. If you tend to carry more weight around your stomach but have great legs, try a flirty A-line dress that hits a few inches above the knee. Be aware that a few inches can make all the difference in looking messy or chic. So, if you’re wearing a tunic with pants, the tunic needs to be shorter than mid-thigh. If you go longer, it throws off the proportions of your body and you look like you couldn’t decide between pants or a dress.

These mistakes may seem insignificant but they do make a whole lot of a difference. Before you dive and get yourself the latest fashion trends the above points will help you achieve the chic and sassy style. —Additional information from Online.

As men become gold diggers

male gold digger

Nhlalwenhle Ncube

THE term ‘‘gold digger’’ from time immemorial has always been confined to describing women who get into relationships for monetary gains, but of late I have noticed that it is now the opposite, as men are now leading in being gold diggers.

Most men have begun to prioritise dollar signs and wealth in a relationship. Money and lifestyle are chief among the concerns of modern day men.

Women are no longer the only ones with “gold digging” ambitions and business strategies, but men have embraced the time-honoured practice with equal resolve.

With most women not alert of the new generation of these men who are gold diggers, they are left in debts, heartbroken and counting their loses.

Where have responsible men disappeared to?

Lately, I have noticed that more and more single men are openly discussing their desire to marry rich women. The trend is worth noting because it represents an inversion of gender roles. It is unfortunate that most women are still in the dark and blinded by love only to realise that they have been used and dumped when it’s already late in life.

Increasingly, enterprising young men are losing faith in the conventional career paths that once guaranteed healthy-sized fortunes, as there seems to be a consensus that all efforts to get rich the old-fashioned way through hard work and ingenuity are futile and the way to go about it is getting a woman who will be your provider.

Some families have even broken up because of such kind of men who just become useless and all they need is to be ‘‘fed’’. A man has to work for his family and the minute you choose to rely on your partner for everything, you seize to be a real man. Note that I am not talking about those ones who would have had some challenges and lost their jobs, but I mean those who choose not to work and rely on a woman.

In this difficult economic climate, people are working whatever schemes they can to ascend the exclusive ranks of high society, the least harmful of which, it appears, involves professing love in exchange for money. It is unfortunate that when women love, most of the times they give their all and men who are gold diggers take advantage of that fact.

Unfortunately for some women, they never get to realise that they have been tricked, as they go on and get married to such kind of useless man. Reality to most women strikes after marriage as they discover they are providers for everything and when they start to complain, these kind of men become abusive. When one finally decides to divorce, she loses a lot of money and property. The gold digger never stops, when he feels he is no longer benefiting, he always jumps to another relationship, leaving the woman with a bleeding heart.

It is high time women watch out for male gold diggers who in most times are charming and do not exhibit any such tendencies. They play their cards very well for the first few dates and once one becomes emotionally invested, they make a swift U-turn and start leaning on the woman for money. If you find that you are suddenly paying a lot more, you should be suspicious as a woman and run to the mountains. Never bleed cash over a man!

Of course it is always difficult to leave a relationship, despite discovering that you are in love with a gold digger as you would have already invested a lot. Better be sad for a short time than to be in a relationship with a man who will suck your blood and the day you wake up broke, dumps you for a better person.

I’m talking of real life issues and women should watch out for gold diggers as they seem to be also the ones taking the LEAD in breaking their hearts and disappointing them a lot!

Women should try and avoid men who are gold diggers as all they are after in life is hooking up with a hard working woman and get rich from the relationship. They are usually clever, making it quite hard to detect that he is a gold digger. Some traits of these gold diggers are that they normally live beyond their means and spend money lavishly once it comes their way, not caring about tomorrow.

Most of them also have a talent of seducing and deceiving women. It is this ‘‘talent’’ of theirs that helps them to easily grab the attention of a woman and get away with whatever they want. Many times its people close to you who recognise that a woman has pressed a wrong button and dealing with a gold digger, so always listen to what other people are whispering and put it into consideration.

No to men who are gold diggers, they must fall!

Love, plight of women dominate Ammara’s album

Ammara Brown

Ammara Brown

Bhekumuzi Ncube, Sunday Life Reporter
WITH several hit tracks and celebrity duets, tireless performer Ammara Brown finally launched her much hyped debut album Ammartia at The Venue in Harare last week.

The album consists of 14 tracks including an intro and outro which mainly tackled real life experiences, analysis of human life, the beauty and dark side of love, celebrations, grieving and self-actualisation.

Although the album bares all, Ammara has a strong message of love and the plight of women in Africa where patriarchal tendencies are very much an issue. Track four of the album, Mukoko with Tytan is a flirtatious song which is already a hit across the country.

In the song, Ammara and Tytan advise men to treat women like queens. Tytan sings “Angisoze ngikuphathe njengesikorobho” which means “I am not going to treat you like a mop”. These lyrics suggest that African women are treated like slaves and housewives only responsible for doing household duties and satisfying men’s sexual desires.

Ammara is against that kind of women suffrage as she compares women to “a treasure” in the song. Hence, Ammara compares a woman to a treasure in quest to make men understand that women are very important and beautiful human beings who need to be treated like princesses.

Wachu Want featuring her beloved sister, Chengeto is another love song which has become familiar with many people in urban centres. In the song, Ammara urges men not to cheat on women, but advises them to be committed to their partners.

Ladies have already fallen in love with the song judging by the way they react whenever the two sisters perform the track. Despite the liveliness of the two sisters when they perform the song, it is the strong message which the song holds that makes women dance to it.

Ammara sings “When you hold her in the night, are you busy setting sights on me, when you hold her in the night, are you thinking of your time with me”.

The lyrics talk about a man who shares an intimate night with his lover, but shamefully thinks about another woman on that same night.

Hence, she continues to sing “Cause I’m no one-time lover, soon you’ll discover. Make up your, make up your mind” pushing men to choose the person they love the most and commit rather than break many women’s hearts.

Ammara said there was no dedication song for his late father, Andy Brown in the album.

“Fans can expect tracks about my beloved father in my next album titled Andy Brown Forever. People will be notified about it in the future,” she said. — @NcubeBhekumuzi

Speak out on GenderBased Violence: Tin Tin

Tinopona “Tin Tin” Katsande

Tinopona “Tin Tin” Katsande

Rumbidzai Mbewe, Sunday Life Correspondent
Every year in the month of November, the world joins hands in commemorating 16 days of activism against gender-based violence.

This year’s celebrations will kick off on 25 November to 10 December and will run under the theme “From Peace in the Home to Peace in the World, Make Education Safe for all”.

One of the survivors of gender-based violence, former Studio 263 actress, Tinopona “Tin Tin” Katsande who was bashed by her then boyfriend, Brian Munjodzi allegedly because she asked him to do dishes while she did laundry.

Tinopona said she has come to realise that the deeper evil in domestic violence is not just the perpetrator but society’s insistence of keeping the violation under the carpet.

“By not talking about domestic violence as a family, community, the society indirectly propels the evil. It is therefore paramount to speak out against gender-based violence,” he said.

Tin Tin said her experience forced her to think of how best she could use the platform she has as a public personality to end violence against women and girls.

“The experience was very traumatising and more so emotionally, mentally and even spiritually more than just the physical trauma. I created my organisation Speak Out Handinyarare whose mandate is to raise funds to build safe houses for abused women across the country,” she said.

She pointed out that gender-based violence affected women as contributors or providers for the family as the woman has to take time off to heal after the beating. She urged women who are in abusive relationships to leave as this can lead to loss of life.

“The cycle of abuse has such devastating ripple effects. It affects women in their homes as care givers and it also affects the symbiotic flow in a family unit especially where there are children,” she said.

The actress encouraged victims of gender-based violence to speak out so that they get assistance.

“If you are in an abusive relationship, turn to someone you know will assist you, move away from that environment and give yourself time to review what is going on and the effects its negatively having on you and your children. Then get up, make a permanent move to never be in that environment again. Do not stay with a partner who beats you up. That’s not love,” she said.

Besides the organisation that she has established, Tinopona speaks through different mediums to spread awareness on gender-based violence.

“I always share awareness with my fellow women through film, television, theatre and support groups. I am sure that through these mediums I help a soul on a daily basis,” she said.

Last year she ran an online campaign #RealMenNailItZw which encouraged men to apply orange nail polish. The campaign ran through different social media networks and its aim was to get 100 000 men and boys across all social, political, religious and cultural divide to come together during the 16 days of activism in solidarity against domestic violence and gender-based violence.

End of the road for Winky D and Oskid?

Winky D and Oskid

Winky D and Oskid

Bruce Ndlovu, Sunday Life Correspondent
COULD Gafa Futi, Winky D’s scorching last album, have been the last time that fans got to hear decorated producer Prince “Oskid” Tapfuma alongside his erstwhile partner in hit-making?

The Gweru-bred producer was conspicuous by his absence from the three singles Winky unleashed in the last fortnight, as the grandmasters of the Zimbabwean music prepare their arsenal for one last assault before the festive season.

While credit has been given to the Gafa for his masterful song-making skills, Oskid has also become known as the man with the Midas touch, with his production hailed as one of the reasons why Winky continued his reign as Zim dancehall’s most valuable chanter.

A year after the release of the 12-track masterpiece, Gafa Futi, the duo still seems estranged. While Winky was at his usual best on the three recent releases, Dzemudanga, My Woman and Madrinks Mucup, Oskid’s name was nowhere to be found on the producer credits.

That on its own is a startling fact for Winky’s fans, as Oskid’s signature sound featured in almost all of the Gafa’s recent hits. In an interview with Sunday Life, the chanter’s manager Jonathan Banda said although they were not against working with the star producer again, Winky’s camp could not promise fans that he would feature in his upcoming album. Winky’s album is set for release on his birthday in February.

“We’re willing to work with anyone and we wouldn’t hesitate to bring someone on board that could improve a song. However, despite that being the case, I’m not promising anyone that we will actually work with Oskid on the forthcoming album,” he said.

After a golden run stretching back from the release of the Gafa Life Kickstape, hints that there was trouble in paradise between Oskid and Winky came last year when the producer claimed that his tags had been removed from songs on Gafa Futi despite earlier promises that they would be kept.

Winky’s camp was adamant that that was not the case, daring the producer to take them to court if he felt they had a case to answer. While the spate played out in public, it is unclear how it was resolved, if it was at all.

Banda said despite the hullabaloo about Oskid’s contributions to that project, some of the credit should have gone to Winky’s in-house producers.

“We’ve got our own in-house producers and if you check on the last album, the bulk of the production was handled by both Oskid and Layan. Because Oskid is the more famous of the two however, he ended up getting most of the credit,” said Banda.

He added that although they had their own producers working with Winky, they were not against working with outsiders, which was how Oskid ended up contributing heavily on the last two albums.

“Although we’ve got our own in-house producers, we’re not averse to working with those on the outside just to bring in that variety to improve a song. In this case, Oskid was the talent which we outsourced,” Banda said.

Despite the bruising back and forth between Winky’s camp and the Gweru producer, Banda said he could not rule out the possibility that they might contract him again in future.

“Despite all that drama you never know what may happen in future. I know that within showbiz there’s always a lot of excitement that sometimes prevents people from making the right decisions,” he said.

Oskid was not available when Sunday Life contacted him for comment. Oskid or no Oskid, the chanter’s camp seems decided that his forthcoming album, will be launched the album on 1 February, the star’s birthday, as he always had big events on that day.

The decision to release the album, titled Gombwe, in February took some by surprise as the chanter usually times his releases for the festive season.

“He usually has events on his birthday and I’ve been trying to convince him for a while to release an album on his birthday. This time I finally managed to get him to commit on that day and I’ve no doubt that it will make it all the more special,” said Banda.

masturbate

Hi Sis Noe
I’M a 25-year-old woman and I always want sex even if I have it three times in one day. I masturbate every day and I can’t stop touching myself. It’s been about a year now since my sex drive has increased. I can’t stop thinking about sex. — Help.

Reply
It is quite natural for some people to have a relatively strong sex drive. Sometimes, you have increased sex drive because of hormonal and physical changes. You may even feel sexually excited when you are in a new relationship. There are instances, however, when increased sex drive indicates a psychological and even a physical problem. That is when it starts interfering with your daily life. Five times a day is a bit too much. Maybe you have bipolar disorder, it is characterised by extreme changes in your mood — from the lows of depression to the highs of mania. Hyper sexuality is often a symptom of bipolar disorder.

This mental illness is treatable. Your over-active sex drive could be due to dementia. Research shows that people with dementia may exhibit inappropriate sexual behaviours, such as masturbating, using obscenities or exposing themselves. It affects both men and women and is usually common in people with severe dementia. Maybe it’s persistent genital arousal disorder — women with this condition are always in a state of arousal and do not find relief even after having an orgasm. The feeling may last from days to weeks.

Several treatment options are now available, including hormonal therapy, antidepressants, behaviour therapy and anaesthetising gels. There are also other diseases such as rabies that cause an abnormal sex drive, I can’t list them all. In a nutshell, your sex drive has interfered with your daily life, you need to talk to your doctor and figure out if you have any medical problem. Your doctor can identify the underlying cause of your high sex drive.

Hi Sis Noe
Is it possible to get pregnant while breastfeeding? — Curious.

Reply
Yes, it is possible to get pregnant within a few months after having a baby — even if you are still lactating. You may have heard about something called lactation amenorrhoea, or the breastfeeding method, which is a birth control method frequently used by new mothers. It works because breastfeeding causes a woman to stop ovulating and in turn, stop menstruating for about six months after giving birth. However, this contraception strategy only prevents pregnancy when under specific circumstances. This means that some new mums might still be at risk of pregnancy depending on their particular breastfeeding situation.

Hi Sis Noe
I am an 18-year-old girl and I was wondering what I must do to get curves. — Worried.

Reply
Curves may be attained in different ways, some of which are more beneficial to health than others. Many have become quite round by eating too many calories and not exercising regularly. Excess weight increases the risk of diseases, including heart disease, diabetes, pregnancy complications, and depression. This roundness may not be the kind of curves you are talking about, I think. Perhaps you are talking about having a more womanly figure; maybe more ample breasts, hips, and/or a plumper posterior. One way to gain curves is by working specific muscle groups in the areas you would like to shape. Eating a well-balanced diet can help, too. That being said, it’s also important to be realistic about the way your body is currently shaped, the shapes that are predominant in your family, and the way you want to look. If you wear baggy clothing, it may de-emphasise whatever curves you already have. Buying clothes that amplify your curves can help.

Your dry vagina can be caused by not being aroused enough before sex or not wanting sex at all. Your man might be penetrating you before you are ready or maybe you are stressed. Maybe you are taking certain birth control contraceptives that cause dryness such as the Pill and Depo-Provera.

Having an infection can also cause this. You could visit a doctor to find out what is wrong with you. In the meantime you can use lubrication to make yourself wet so that you avoid the painful sex you are having. As for orgasm, every woman’s experience of orgasm is different. While some women experience powerful orgasms that feel like clear events, other women experience orgasms that are quite mild.

Hi Sis Noe
I AM five months pregnant and still having sex with my husband. I want to know when I must stop. I don’t want to hurt my baby. — Curious.

Most women who are having a normal pregnancy can continue to have sex right up until their water breaks or they go into labour. You won’t hurt the baby by making love. The amniotic sac and the strong muscles of the uterus protect your baby, and the thick mucus plug that seals the cervix helps guard against infection. And while orgasm may cause mild uterine contractions (as can nipple stimulation and the prostaglandins in semen); they are generally temporary and harmless. There are many reasons why sex during pregnancy can be more enjoyable, even if you are doing it less. There is an increase in vaginal lubrication, the engorgement of the genital area helps some people become orgasmic for the first time or multi-orgasmic, the lack of birth control, or if you have been trying for a while, a return to pleasurable sex as opposed to pro-creational.
