ALTHOUGH dance is a generally neglected phenomenon, local dance group Super Geeks are setting their sights on making careers out of dance.

The group was formed in 2014 when six solo dancers came together to form a force that combined their individual strengths.

“We met as individual dancers and someone suggested that we come together as a group. Because each one of us possesses a different strength, we become so much stronger as a group. We are a lot like Marvel heroes,” said Pasha Mpala, the group’s spokesperson.

Made up of six members between the ages of 20 and 23, Super Geeks major in hip- hop, krump Afro-house and contemporary dance but can vary their style depending on what their audience wants. They consider themselves a versatile bunch who can tackle any dance move and manage to deliver to the audience’s satisfaction.

The Super Geeks, whose motto is “Diversity is our strength’’ came up with the name Super Geeks in an attempt to embrace the rather nerdy nature of the group members who take academia as seriously as they take their dancing.

“Our group is made up mainly of students, particularly in the field of Science and Technology. We have Information Technology, Engineering, Mining and Forestry students. Basically we are geeks who just know how to dance,” Pasha said.

The two-time Zim Hip-hop nominees do not have a professional choreographer or dancing coach but have learnt to be their own and each other’s teachers and Pasha said this sets them apart from other dance groups.

The Super Geeks are on their second Zim Hip-hop award nomination and although they failed to bag the award last year, they are hopeful that they will bring it home this time around. They have performed at different events around the country, including Intwasa Arts Festival koBulawayo, Night of Arts, and are the 2016 runners-up for the Jibilika Dance Festival.

They have worked closely with Sandra Ndebele as her backup dancers and even appear on her Madhlire video.

The next big thing for the Super Geeks is the Dream Star finale which will be held on 17 December in Harare. From there they will be off to Hollywood, USA to represent Zimbabwe in the June 2017 edition of World Championship of Performing Arts.
