IN an incredible display of endurance, adventure, and passion, Zimbabwean couple Vusumuzi Mnkandla and Thando Tshuma have triumphantly cycled through eleven African countries, traversing an impressive distance from South Africa to Kenya.

From the sun-baked savannas of South Africa to the majestic sceneries in Mozambique, Mnkandla and Tshuma have pedalled their way through some of Africa’s most breathtaking scenery, relying on their physical strength, mental toughness, and unwavering teamwork.
Having completed the gruelling first leg of their journey, the couple is currently resting in Kenya, rejuvenating their bodies and minds in preparation for Season Two of their cycling adventure, set to commence in January.
As they gear up for the next stage of their odyssey, Mnkandla and Tshuma are filled with excitement and anticipation, eager to explore more of Africa’s hidden gems, immerse themselves in the continent’s rich cultural heritage, and inspire others to embrace the beauty of cycling and the thrill of adventure.
With their remarkable achievement, the Zimbabwean couple has proven that with determination, resilience, and a shared passion, even the most daunting challenges can be overcome, and the impossible can become possible.
Speaking to Sunday Life, Tshuma said that she is recovering from an ankle twist that she had while in Kenya. She said they were enjoying their rest, preparing for Season Two of their cycling journey.
“I have taken some time recovering from a twisted ankle however, I have been recovering very well. We are definitely starting our Season Two going from Kenya to Zimbabwe in January,” said Tshuma.
The couple revealed that this time around, they will be concluding their cycling journey in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe, after embarking from Nairobi, Kenya.
They said that the decision, which was made in response to an outpouring of support and requests from their fellow Zimbabweans, is a testament to the couple’s commitment to sharing their inspirational story with the people of their motherland.
Mnkandla said that they were inundated with messages and appeals from Zimbabweans, who were eager to catch a glimpse of the dynamic duo as they pedalled their way through the continent.
The adventurous duo, who have been making headlines with their epic cycling journey across Africa, had initially set their sights on exploring the ancient land of the Pharaohs. However, their dreams of cycling along the Nile River and marvelling at the Pyramids of Giza have been put on hold due to the precarious security situation in northern Kenya.
“We have been forced to reassess our travel plans after our initial ambition to cycle from Kenya to Egypt was deemed too risky,” said Mnkandla.
According to Mnkandla and Tshuma, the northern region of Kenya, which provides the access to Egypt, is notorious for banditry and other security threats, making it a significant risk for travellers, particularly those on bicycles.
“We have already faced numerous challenges on our journey, including rugged terrain, inclement weather, and language barriers, are unwilling to take unnecessary risks that could jeopardise our safety,” said Mnkandla.
As a result, they have decided to explore alternative routes and destinations, prioritising their security and well-being above their ambitions. While their Egyptian adventure will have to wait, Mnkandla and Tshuma remain committed to sharing their inspiring story and promoting cycling as a sustainable and exciting way to explore Africa.
The couple revealed that their season two journey is going to start from Nairobi, Kenya to Tanzania, Mozambique, Malawi, Zambia and finally Zimbabwe.
After completing the first leg of their epic cycling journey, Tshuma also shared her insights on the transformative power of cross-cultural exchange.
“Now we understand what it means to be outside the country, the uncertainty we had is cleared and we are looking to our journey,” she revealed, highlighting the profound impact of their experiences on their worldview.
The initial uncertainty that accompanied their decision to embark on this adventure has given way to a deeper appreciation for the richness of diverse cultures and the importance of authentic storytelling.
As the couple prepares to embark on the second phase of their journey, they are eagerly looking forward to engaging with locals, forging meaningful connections, and gathering a treasure trove of stories that will enrich their narrative and inspire their audience.
With their perspectives broadened and their passion for storytelling reignited the couple is poised to take their audience on an unforgettable journey of discovery and exploration.
